Transferrin Saturation — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

Transferrin saturation shows what share of your iron-carrying protein is actually carrying iron.

Transferrin Saturation is given as a share, showing how busy your iron-shuttling system is running. Your care team leans on it to understand how iron reaches your tissues.

Also known as: TSAT, Transferrin Sat, Iron Saturation, % Saturation, Percent Transferrin Saturation

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Transferrin Saturation?

This figure divides the iron currently bound to transferrin (the blood's iron shuttle) by the shuttle's total capacity. It shows how full those carriers are running.

Why is Transferrin Saturation tested?

Your doctor uses it to see how well iron is reaching your tissues. It also helps tell apart different kinds of iron imbalance.

What is a normal Transferrin Saturation range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
Normal: 20–50%; Low (<20%) may suggest iron deficiency; High (>50%) may suggest iron overload

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Transferrin Saturation value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high Transferrin Saturation result mean?

A high value means more iron than usual is circulating. This can appear with iron overload or too much iron intake, worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Transferrin Saturation result mean?

A low value suggests too little iron is reaching your tissues. This can go with low iron or long-term inflammation.

What can affect your Transferrin Saturation result?

  • Iron stores and diet
  • Inflammation
  • Inherited iron conditions
  • Liver health
  • Recent iron or transfusion
