Iron studies blood test
Iron studies measure the iron in your blood and your body's iron stores, used to understand iron-deficiency and overload.
Last reviewed: 2026-08-16
What does the Iron Studies measure?
Iron studies measure serum iron, ferritin (stores), TIBC/UIBC and transferrin saturation.
Why is the Iron Studies ordered?
They are ordered to look into anaemia, tiredness and hair loss, and are especially relevant given how common iron deficiency is in India.

- Serum IronSerum Iron measures the iron travelling in your blood at that moment. This iron is carried by a protein called transferrin.
- FerritinFerritin is a protein that stores iron inside your cells. Its blood level mirrors the size of your body's iron reserves.
- TIBCTIBC (total iron-binding capacity) measures the most iron your blood could carry. It mainly reflects how much of the carrier protein transferrin you have.
- UIBCUIBC (unsaturated iron-binding capacity) measures the carrier protein in your blood that is not yet holding iron. It reflects the spare room left for iron.
- Transferrin SaturationThis figure divides the iron currently bound to transferrin (the blood's iron shuttle) by the shuttle's total capacity. It shows how full those carriers are running.
- TransferrinTransferrin is the main blood protein that binds iron and moves it safely. It carries iron from where you absorb it to the cells that need it.

Frequently asked questions
- What is included in the Iron Studies?
- Iron studies measure serum iron, ferritin (stores), TIBC/UIBC and transferrin saturation. It typically reports 6 results: Serum Iron, Ferritin, TIBC, UIBC, Transferrin Saturation, Transferrin.
- Why is the Iron Studies ordered?
- They are ordered to look into anaemia, tiredness and hair loss, and are especially relevant given how common iron deficiency is in India.
- How should the Iron Studies be read as a whole?
- No single value tells the full story — the results are read together, and each value is compared against the reference range printed on your own report, which can vary by lab, method and equipment.
- Do the reference ranges in the Iron Studies vary between labs?
- Yes. Ranges depend on the laboratory's equipment and method, so the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result. Each test page names the standards body behind its range.
