Urea — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

Urea is a waste from protein that your liver makes and your kidneys clear from your blood.

Urea sits at the crossroads of two body processes at the same time. Reading it reflects both how waste is being cleared and how quickly protein is being broken apart.

Also known as: Blood Urea, Serum Urea, BU, Urea Nitrogen (as urea)

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Urea?

The liver forms this compound to package the nitrogen left over from breaking down protein. The kidneys then filter it into urine, so the level reflects both processes.

Why is Urea tested?

You have this test to check how well your kidneys clear waste and how fast your body breaks down protein.

What is a normal Urea range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
15–40 mg/dL

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Urea value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

40 mg/dL6.66 mmol/L

What does a high Urea result mean?

A high level can mean your kidneys clear less well, you eat a lot of protein, or your body breaks down more protein. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Urea result mean?

A low level can go with low protein intake or your liver making less urea.

What can affect your Urea result?

  • Protein in your diet
  • Kidney waste clearing
  • Hydration
  • Liver function
  • Fever or injury raising protein breakdown
