Total Cholesterol Normal Range — NCEP ATP III Thresholds

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

Total cholesterol adds up all the cholesterol your blood is carrying at one time.

Total Cholesterol is usually the headline figure on a lipid panel. It bundles the good and the troubling carriers together, which is why context matters when you read yours.

Also known as: TC, Serum Cholesterol, Cholesterol Total, Blood Cholesterol

Lower is generally better

Lower is generally better here, though your doctor also looks at the good and bad cholesterol split, not just the total.

What is Total Cholesterol?

This sums the cholesterol carried inside every lipoprotein particle (fat-and-protein bundles) travelling in your sample. It rolls the harmful and protective carriers into a single figure.

Why is Total Cholesterol tested?

Your doctor uses it to get a first sense of your heart risk. It is a routine part of a lipid (blood fats) check.

What is a normal Total Cholesterol range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
Desirable: <200 mg/dL; Borderline High: 200–239 mg/dL; High: ≥240 mg/dL

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does a Total Cholesterol of 200 mean?

Find your Total Cholesterol result in the table below, then read the band it falls into. Each band names the guideline body it comes from. Always compare against the range printed on your own report.

Total Cholesterol Below 200 mg/dLDesirable

If your result is 150, 170, 190, 199 or anywhere in this band: This is the range most guidelines regard as desirable. Total cholesterol is a starting point; LDL and HDL tell you more.

Worth asking your doctor

  • Is my total cholesterol fine for my heart risk?

Total Cholesterol 200–240 mg/dLBorderline high

If your result is 200, 210, 230, 239 or anywhere in this band: This is a little above the desirable range. What it means depends on the split between your LDL and HDL.

Worth asking your doctor

  • Should I look at my LDL and HDL rather than the total alone?

Total Cholesterol 240 mg/dL and aboveHigh

If your result is 240, 260, 280, 300 or anywhere in this band: This is above the desirable range. It is worth discussing with your doctor, who reads it with your other lipid results and overall risk.

Worth asking your doctor

  • What is the plan given my full lipid picture?
  • When should this be repeated?

What does a high Total Cholesterol result mean?

A higher value means more cholesterol is moving through your blood. This can point to a raised heart risk and is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Total Cholesterol result mean?

A lower value often reflects a healthy balance of blood fats. Very low levels are occasionally linked to other health matters worth checking.

What can affect your Total Cholesterol result?

  • Saturated and trans fat in food
  • Family history
  • Physical activity level
  • Thyroid function
  • Age and sex

In the Indian context

South Asians, including Indians, often develop heart disease younger. It can also appear at lower cholesterol levels than in Western groups. Several studies note this pattern.
