Rheumatoid Factor — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This is an antibody that can show up when the immune system acts against the body's own tissue.

Your Rheumatoid Factor result is one clue about how your immune system may be behaving. On its own it settles nothing, since it can appear for varied reasons. Doctors read it beside your exam.

Also known as: RF, RhF, RA factor, anti-IgG antibody, rheumatoid factor IgM

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Rheumatoid Factor?

Rheumatoid factor is a self-directed antibody, mistakenly binding the tail end of other antibodies made by your immune system. This reaction appears more often in certain autoimmune and long-term inflammatory conditions.

Why is Rheumatoid Factor tested?

You may have this test when inflammatory joint or autoimmune disease is being looked into. It adds support alongside the exam and other tests.

What is a normal Rheumatoid Factor range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
Negative: <14 IU/mL; weakly positive: 14–50 IU/mL; positive: >50 IU/mL (cut-offs vary by assay and laboratory)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Rheumatoid Factor value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high Rheumatoid Factor result mean?

A positive RF goes with some autoimmune inflammatory conditions. At higher levels it can point to more body-wide involvement in certain diseases. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low Rheumatoid Factor result mean?

A negative RF does not rule out inflammatory joint disease. Some forms of rheumatoid arthritis and other joint conditions show no RF.

What can affect your Rheumatoid Factor result?

  • RF can be positive at low levels in healthy older people with no disease
  • Long-lasting infections such as hepatitis C and tuberculosis can turn RF positive
  • RF is not very specific; anti-CCP is usually seen as more specific for rheumatoid arthritis
  • Higher RF levels are more likely to matter than low-positive ones
  • Other autoimmune conditions, such as Sjögren syndrome, can also make RF positive

In the Indian context

India has a notable load of rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions. RF testing is widely available and used in primary care across the country.
