Fructosamine — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This shows your average blood sugar over the past few weeks, a shorter window than the usual long-term test.

Fructosamine offers a snapshot of your typical sugar across recent weeks rather than months. It steps in when a briefer view suits your situation better.

Also known as: glycated protein, glycated albumin (related), serum fructosamine, fructosamine level

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is Fructosamine?

Fructosamine measures blood sugar (glucose) that has stuck to proteins in your blood, mainly albumin. Because these proteins turn over quickly, it reflects a shorter window. It shows your average sugar over about two to three weeks.

Why is Fructosamine tested?

This test is used when a shorter view of your sugar helps, or when HbA1c may be unreliable.

What is a normal Fructosamine range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
200–285 µmol/L (typical reference range for non-diabetic adults; varies by laboratory)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your Fructosamine value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high Fructosamine result mean?

A higher fructosamine can mean your average blood sugar has been raised over recent weeks. It is worth discussing with your doctor. They can read it with your other results.

What does a low Fructosamine result mean?

A lower fructosamine can mean lower average blood sugar. It can also reflect low blood protein levels. Your doctor can explain what it means for you.

What can affect your Fructosamine result?

  • your blood albumin level
  • thyroid function
  • some medicines
  • kidney or liver problems
  • red blood cell breakdown

In the Indian context

The RSSDI notes that fructosamine can help when HbA1c is unreliable, such as with the haemoglobin variants seen in parts of India [RSSDI].
