C-Peptide — What It Means in Your Blood Test

New to reading lab reports? Start with our guide to reading a blood test report

This shows how much insulin your body is making on its own.

C-Peptide tells you how busy your own pancreas has been building insulin. Because it comes out alongside each unit made, it reflects home-grown supply, not injected doses.

Also known as: connecting peptide, C peptide, serum C-peptide, proinsulin C-peptide

Kept in balance

This isn't a case where higher or lower is better. Your body keeps it in a narrow band, and both directions can matter.

What is C-Peptide?

When your pancreas builds insulin, it snips off this fragment and releases it alongside, one piece for every insulin unit. Measuring it therefore reveals the pancreas's own output, separate from any injected insulin.

Why is C-Peptide tested?

This test reveals how much of its own insulin your pancreas produces, helping your doctor understand a blood sugar problem.

What is a normal C-Peptide range?

India
No India-specific national reference interval is published for this parameter; your lab's printed range is the most reliable comparison.
Global
0.5–2.0 ng/mL (fasting reference, adults)

Ranges vary by lab, method and equipment — the range printed on your own report is the one that applies to your result.

What does your C-Peptide value mean?

There is no widely-accepted set of value bands for this parameter. Compare your result with the reference range printed on your own report, and discuss it with your doctor.

What does a high C-Peptide result mean?

A higher C-peptide can mean your body is making plenty of its own insulin. Your doctor reads it with your sugar results. It is worth discussing with your doctor.

What does a low C-Peptide result mean?

A lower C-peptide can mean your pancreas is making less insulin than usual. Your doctor can explain what it means for you.

What can affect your C-Peptide result?

  • your weight
  • kidney function
  • whether you had fasted
  • some medicines
  • the sample timing

In the Indian context

Indian diabetes guidance from the RSSDI uses C-peptide to help tell apart the types of diabetes when the right treatment is unclear [RSSDI].
