What does the method column mean on a lab report?

The method column names the technique the lab used, such as HPLC, ELISA or an enzymatic method. The number your lab reports depends on which method its machine uses, so compare your result against your own lab's range [CLSI, C28-A3]. That is one reason each lab prints its own range.

Why does the method change my number?

Different methods measure the same substance in different ways. So the number on your report depends on which method the lab used [CLSI, C28-A3].

What do HPLC, ELISA and enzymatic methods mean for my result?

HPLC is used for HbA1c, a sugar-control test. Different HPLC machines can give slightly different HbA1c values [CLSI, 2010]. The same blood sample sent to two labs might read 6.8% at one and 7.0% at another.

ELISA is used for hormone tests like TSH and Vitamin D. Different ELISA kits use different antibodies. That is why TSH reference ranges vary between 3.5 and 5.0 mIU/L across labs [ATA, 2012].

Enzymatic methods are used for cholesterol and glucose. Results from enzymatic methods are highly consistent across labs [CLSI, 2010].

What should I do about the method column?

If you always test at the same lab, your trend comparisons are reliable. The method stays the same, so a change in your number is more likely to be real.

If you switch labs, tell your doctor. They may want to read any change cautiously, because the method may differ [CLSI, 2010].
