How to read a report that shows previous visits in columns
Some reports add extra dated columns for your previous visits, so you can see the trend. To read it, follow one test across the row and watch how the value moves between the dated columns. The direction of travel often means more than a single reading [CLSI, 2010].

Which column is my latest result?
Usually the first result column, next to the reference range. The dates at the top of the columns tell you which visit is which.
Older visits sit further to the right, each under its own date.
Where does the reference range sit here?
The range is often on the far left or far right of the row, shared across all the visit columns.
Each dated value is read against that same range.
How should I read the trend?
Look at the direction and the size of the change, not just the latest number.
A steady value, a rising value and a falling value can mean very different things [CLSI, 2010].

- Why are there several dates across the top?
- Each date is one visit. The report lines up the same test across visits so you can see the trend.
- Is a small change between visits important?
- Often not. Values move a little naturally. A clear direction over several tests usually matters more than one small step.
- Can I trust a trend across different labs?
- Take care: different labs use different methods and ranges, so a trend is cleanest when the results come from the same lab [CLSI, 2010].
- What if a column is blank?
- A blank simply means that test was not done at that visit. Only the tests ordered each time have a value.
